Description and Service Details
Description (Service) Foundation aims to fight Diabetes and preserve a legacy offering: 
 
Banting Homestead Heritage Park - a 107 acre site and the birthplace of Sir Frederick Banting, co-discoverer of insulin, Canada's first Nobel Laureate, and an artist, carver and war hero.  
 
School tours, Diabetes classes and general interest tours - provided at the Foundation's Diabetes Management and Education Centre (DMEC) complex located at the Heritage Park. Tours must be scheduled in advance and diabetes classes require pre-registration.  
 
The complex also includes:  
* the restored, historic Octagonal Drive Shed, used as a gathering place  
* the restored/adapted historic Banting Farmhouse 
* heritage reception and exhibit building - artifacts, memorabilia, paintings, prints and manuscripts created by, or relating to, Sir Fred are arranged in 'themes' throughout the complex. Banting the Artist, Banting's war service, Insulin Discovery team and discovery process, Nobel prize, diabetes facts and statistics are examples. 
* the Banting Legacy Trail, a public walking trail, approximately 400 meters in length around the perimeter of the buildings 
* a picnic area free to use  
* a BBQ available to support your event (book in advance - a fee applies) 
 
Foundation provides other programs, including: 
* Annual Banting Legacy Week events in support of World Diabetes Day and Sir Fred's birthday anniversary 
* Annual scholarship to support the higher education aspirations of a youth living with diabetes 
* Annual Grad/Post-Doc award to promote collaboration among health care teams focused on the 'Transition' challenges for youth living with diabetes 
* Annual Banting Legacy Transition Lecture & Symposium for health care professionals 
* eLearning, online course for health care providers and teachers interested in learning more about Diabetes and Mental Health comorbidites in youth 
* Annual student Art Contest 
* Annual Awards to persons who have lived with insulin for 50 plus years
Hours Heritage Park: Mon-Sun 6 am-7 pm  
 
Diabetes Management and Education Centre and exhibits:  
Tue 11 am-4 pm * First and Third weekends each month, Sat 11 am-4 pm, Sun 1 pm-4 pm 
Tours available daily by appointment * Diabetes classes held weekly, registration required
