Description and Service Details

Description (Service) Free clinic for individuals unable to complete their income tax and benefit return themselves and are unable to pay for assistance. Volunteers can help complete the income tax and benefit return if income is low and tax situation is simple.

Individual tax information is to be dropped off at The Meeting Place Tobermory; returns are completed off site. Appointments can be made with volunteer tax filer.

Can prepare last year's and previous years' returns up to five years.

Eligibility Ages: 16 year(s) and up These suggested maximum income levels should serve as a guideline only

Single individual - up to $35,000
Two-person family - up to $45,000 (combined income of a couple, or one adult with one child under 18)
+ add $2,500 for each additional dependent child in the family

Interest income limited to under $1,000

Local community organizations have the flexibility to adjust or set additional eligibility criteria for taxpayers based on the local economic environment, the population they serve, and their own capacity

Volunteers do not prepare tax returns for complex situations such as:
  • returns for deceased persons
  • individuals who file for bankruptcy
  • self-employed individuals
  • individuals who report capital gains or losses
  • individuals who report employment expenses, or business or rental income and expenses


Eligible taxpayers normally served by the CVITP include:
  • Indigenous peoples
  • Low-income individuals and social assistance recipients
  • Newcomers to Canada
  • Seniors
  • Students
Application Call The Meeting Place Tobermory to arrange drop-off. Past clients will be contacted for drop-off.

Documents to bring include: previous year's Notice of Assessment, copy of previous years' tax return, current tax documents and ID.
